War and Peace in Ueno
Ueno Park is one of Japan's most popular city parks, featuring an abundance of cherry blossom trees, stunning shrines, major museums, and a zoo. But most visitors aren’t aware that Ueno was destroyed by civil war in 1868 and it became a total wasteland. On this tour, Professor Steele reveals how Shoguns and Samurais battled for control of Tokyo and who the winners and losers of that civil war were. Along the way, you’ll learn how to heal pain with incense smoke at a Buddhist temple, get your fortune at a Shinto shrine, and understand Ueno's evolution from a scorched battlefield to the cultural and historical center it is today.
